Shakespeare is a well known writer back then and still today. It is no wonder why his plays are still what they were when he wrote them. They have the same universal themes, and a great message to follow. Shakespeare gives the reader something to think about. It shows metaphors and similies, and compares the dark with the light, moon to the sun.

Shakespeare is trying to tell the reader or the watcher of his play, a message about love. If you love someone so deeply, you will do anything and everything to be with that person. Sensual love is first seen in the jokes made by Samson and Gregory about the nurse, and in Mercutio's jokes about Rosaline. Petty love is presented in the "love sick" Romeo. Romeo is in love with the idea of love and thinks that Rosaline is the girl of his dreams. The third type of love is “Conventional Love", which is developed in the situation of arranged marriage of Juliet. Romeo and Juliet showed great persistence in this day in age that their or other differences can be put aside for true love. Here is a quote by Juliet..."O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love and I'll no longer be a Capulet." In this quote, Juliet asks Romeo to change his name and disobey his father, but if he will not, she will, and no longer be a Capulet. The story of Romeo and Juliet teaches everyone that love comes with sacrifices. Romeo and Juliet were willing to die for one another. Juliet says, "What's Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man." Juliet does not care that he is the enemy of her family. She loves him and wants to be with him, no matter what. Another reason why it is so universal is that there are many of obstacles that come up that are consequences for their love, which only make it stronger. To show this, "Give me, give me! Oh, tell not me of fear!" Juliet takes a magic poison to make herself seem dead so she can run away with Romeo, because Romeo got banished from Verona and can’t be with her. So, Friar Lawrence devised a plan to help Juliet escape from Verona to be with her love. Also, Romeo's genuine and passionate love of Juliet stands out right from the begining. For example, Romeo wanted to go to the party only because he though Rosaline was going to be there, by the time Romeo got to the party he only forgot about her. Romeo fell in love at first sight with Juliet. “Oh, she shows the torches how to burn bright! She stands out against the darkness like a jeweled earring hanging against the cheek of an African. Her beauty is too good for this world; she's too beautiful to die and be buried. She outshines the other women like a white dove in the middle of a flock of crows. When this dance is over, I'll see where she stands, and then I'll touch her hand with my rough and ugly one. Did my heart ever love anyone before this moment? My eyes were liars, then, because I never saw true beauty before tonight.” This was said by Romeo when he first laid eyes on Juliet at the party. This theme will never succeed as being old, but will always be a theme in our time and time to come. It is simply a message that every understands. People have also thought about the universal themes in Romeo and Juliet. For Example a director of a school play says "Romeo and Juliet has universal themes relevant in today's society." Also "Shakespeare's plays are beautifully universal," says Robin Stone, assistant professor of music and the play's director. "So I have attempted to find ways this drama can be a metaphor for our time and our culture."
"Shakespeare's tragedy explores the conflict of natural emotion in the face of illogical, human constructs. Throughout human history we have irrationally killed each other in the name of religion and ethnicity, devastated each other and our achievements over property, murdered each other because of long-standing feuds, conquered and destroyed because of desires for power, and committed other heinous acts for other specious reasons." said an instructor of Iowa State University.

Inconclusion, many of Shakespeare's themes still live on, because those themes are still in our socity and they always will. Just like people died back then, people are still going to die today. It's part of our society and we cant change that.
